How we work

Our process in 4 steps

  1. No-obligation quote

Send us the document you want translated into Mandarin Chinese. You receive a competitive quote within 1 hour on working days. Short lines, one dedicated project manager who is there for you.

  2. Assigning a translator

One of our specialist Mandarin Chinese translators gets to work. For certified translations, a professional translator who issues a certified statement of accuracy; for business, technical, legal or medical texts, a specialist from that field.

  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Mandarin Chinese translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

  4. Delivery

You receive the Mandarin Chinese translation digitally by email, in the same layout as the original. Certified translations are also sent by registered post where a hard copy is required.

Certified or standard? How to choose the right Mandarin Chinese translation

  • Choose certified

When an authority requires an official, certified translation: the Home Office, courts, notaries, registrars or a foreign government. Escalated to notarisation or FCDO apostille where needed.

  • Choose standard

For business publication, websites, marketing and internal documentation. Faster and without certification, with the same specialist translator.

Not sure? Send your document and we will advise which form the receiving authority expects.

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Mandarin Chinese

Many teams speak good Mandarin Chinese and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Mandarin Chinese texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Wrong script for the target region

    Voorbeeld:

Sending Simplified script to a counterparty in Taipei, or Traditional to an NMPA submission in Beijing — it reads at once as wrongly addressed.

    Onze aanpak:

We confirm up front whether your project needs Simplified (zh-Hans) or Traditional (zh-Hant), based on your target region and reader.

  • Confusing Mandarin and Cantonese

    Voorbeeld:

Delivering a Cantonese request in Mandarin by default — the two are not mutually intelligible by speech and carry their own word choices.

    Onze aanpak:

We treat Mandarin and Cantonese as separate languages and never substitute one for the other; you confirm which you need up front.

  • Proper names and transcription

    Voorbeeld:

Transcribing a personal or company name by machine often yields several homophonous character combinations in Pinyin, each carrying a different meaning.

    Onze aanpak:

We agree the character choice for names with you and add Hanzi or Pinyin in brackets where disambiguation is needed.

  • False legal equivalence

    Voorbeeld:

A Chinese corporate form such as "有限公司" (yǒuxiàn gōngsī) is not automatically the same as a UK limited company; the liability and registration rules differ by legal system.

    Onze aanpak:

We match corporate forms, job titles and legal terms to the legal system of your target region, working with your legal adviser where needed.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Mandarin Chinese wordt gesproken

Chinese is not a single market. A product dossier for the Chinese regulator NMPA calls for Simplified script and mainland terminology, while a contract for a counterparty in Taipei or Hong Kong expects Traditional script. We match script, terminology and register to the region where your document will be read, and confirm that choice up front in the quote.

Simplified or Traditional Chinese — which variant should I choose?
Choose Simplified Chinese (zh-Hans) for mainland China and Singapore, and Traditional Chinese (zh-Hant) for Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and most Western diaspora communities. The difference is in the character form, not in the spoken language. We confirm the script variant per project in the quote, matched to your target market.
Mandarin or Cantonese — which language do I need?
Mandarin (Putonghua) is the spoken and written standard of mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore. Cantonese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin by speech and is used in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong. We never substitute Mandarin for Cantonese: both are separate languages in our cluster, and you request each one separately.
Does a Chinese document need an apostille for use in the UK?
Since November 2023 mainland China has joined the Hague Apostille Convention (1961). Documents from mainland China can since then be legalised by apostille; before that, consular legalisation was required. For Hong Kong and Macau the apostille has applied for longer. For a UK-issued document going to China, an apostille is obtained through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) — see [GOV.UK — Get a document legalised](https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised). We guide you to the right route by region of origin and arrange the certified translation that goes with it.
How do you certify a Chinese translation for use in the UK?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the FCDO. This applies to UKVI and Home Office immigration, company registrations, notarial deeds and court papers; we confirm in the quote which level your receiving authority requires.
How does Ecrivus handle script conversion between Latin and Chinese script?
When translating from English or Dutch into Chinese we convert fully to Chinese characters in the right script, Simplified or Traditional. Proper names we romanise in Pinyin where your audience expects it, or render in suitable characters agreed with you. When translating from Chinese into English we follow Pinyin for names, with the Hanzi optionally in brackets for disambiguation.
How does Ecrivus verify the quality of a Chinese translation?
We combine native specialist translators with a structured QA layer: a term list, a script and character check, and a second review where the legal field, risk profile or volume requires it. CAT tools (Trados, memoQ, Phrase TMS) keep terminology and character choice consistent across volume and repeated content, and a translation memory keeps follow-up work aligned and lowers the cost over time.
Which professional bodies do you work with for Chinese translation?
We work with native specialist Chinese translators and reference the recognised UK professional bodies — the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting), the CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists) and, for interpreting, the NRPSI (National Register of Public Service Interpreters). These are bodies of reference for the profession; we name them so you can see the standard the work is held to.
Why choose a Chinese translation agency instead of finding a freelance translator yourself?
A Chinese translation agency takes the coordination off your hands: we select the specialist who fits your document and sector, decide Simplified or Traditional script with you, arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer. You keep one point of contact for script, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
