Our approach

Multilingual typesetting that looks professional in every language

Translated text rarely fits one-to-one in the original layout: German runs about 25% longer, Chinese 20% more compact. What is DTP and typesetting?

Our DTP specialists work in InDesign, QuarkXPress, Word, PowerPoint and almost every other common format. We have specific experience with RTL typesetting for Arabic and Hebrew and with Asian typography for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. On request we coordinate translation, editing and DTP in a single flow with one point of contact, so you do not have to bridge between a translation agency and a DTP studio yourself. Lead time: 1–3 business days for standard projects, longer schedules available on request.

Language reach

DTP in every language and script

From European core languages to RTL scripts (Arabic, Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) — our DTP specialists understand the typographic conventions of every market.

Our process

How it works

  1. Source file submission

You provide your source files: InDesign, Word, PDF, PowerPoint or another format. We review the files and flag any adjustments needed for the translated version.

  2. Text import and placement

The translated text is imported into the layout grid. We account for text expansion or contraction: a German translation is typically 20–30% longer than the source, while Chinese tends to be more compact.

  3. Layout and style adjustment

Our DTP specialist tunes the layout: font sizes, line spacing, column widths and text flows are adjusted so the translated text fits the original design without compromise.

  4. Special script handling

For RTL languages (Arabic, Hebrew) the entire layout is mirrored. For scripts with special characters (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic) the right fonts and style settings are applied.

  5. Print-ready delivery

You receive the typeset files print- or publication-ready: as an InDesign package, PDF/X or in any other format you require — ready for press or digital release.

Typography as a discipline

Our DTP specialists handle every script-system challenge.

DTP is not pixel-pushing — it is cross-cultural typography. Arabic reads from the right, Chinese sets vertically, German runs 25% longer than English. Every language has its own rules. Our specialists know them and deliver publications that look equally professional in every market.

Why is DTP needed after a translation?
Translated text is rarely the same length as the original. German runs about 25–30% longer than English, while Chinese and Japanese are more compact. In a finished publication such as a brochure or annual report, this leads to overlapping text, shrunken type, page overruns or empty space. A DTP specialist rebuilds the layout so the end result looks professional in every language.
Which DTP formats does Ecrivus support?
We work with Adobe InDesign (the most widely used DTP application), Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, QuarkXPress and PDF. We can also typeset in older versions of InDesign if your printer requires it. Get in touch if you work with another format — we usually find a workable solution.
Can Ecrivus handle RTL typesetting for Arabic or Hebrew?
Yes. RTL typesetting (right-to-left) demands specialist expertise: the entire layout is mirrored, text frames are placed from right to left and the right typefaces are used to render Arabic or Hebrew characters correctly. Our RTL DTP specialists have extensive experience with this type of work, including bidirectional content (a mix of Latin and Arabic).
Does Ecrivus deliver print-ready files?
Yes. We deliver files in the format your printer requires: PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-4 or as an InDesign package with all fonts and images embedded. As standard we verify correct bleed, colour profiles (CMYK or Pantone) and font embedding. On request we also run a preflight check against Ghent Workgroup standards.
Can Ecrivus combine translation and DTP in a single project?
Yes. We offer combined translation-and-DTP projects in which both stages run through one workflow. This is more efficient, faster and more cost-effective than two separate orders. We coordinate internally between translator and DTP specialist, so you have a single point of contact for the full project — from source Word file to print-ready PDF.
How does your DTP pricing model work?
DTP rates depend on source-file complexity (InDesign > PowerPoint > Word), the number of pages, the number of languages and any extras such as RTL mirroring or CJK typography. For large multilingual projects (e.g. an annual report in 5 languages) we offer tiered rates. For combined translation-plus-DTP projects there is a bundle advantage. Rates are always confirmed in writing in advance per project.
What if our brand fonts do not include Arabic or Chinese?
If your brand typeface does not include Arabic or Chinese characters, we source a suitable CJK or RTL variant that stays as close as possible to your visual identity. We verify font licensing in advance so you avoid rights issues at publication. In specific cases we recommend liaising directly with your design team for a brand-level decision.
