How we work

Our process in 4 steps

  1. No-obligation quote

Send us the document you want translated into Catalan. You receive a competitive quote within 1 hour on working days. Short lines, one dedicated project manager who is there for you.

  2. Assigning a translator

One of our specialist Catalan translators gets to work. For certified translations, a professional translator who issues a certified statement of accuracy; for business, technical, legal or medical texts, a specialist from that field.

  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Catalan translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

  4. Delivery

You receive the Catalan translation digitally by email, in the same layout as the original. Certified translations are also sent by registered post where a hard copy is required.

Certified or standard? How to choose the right Catalan translation

  • Choose certified

When an authority requires an official, certified translation: the Home Office, courts, notaries, registrars or a foreign government. Escalated to notarisation or FCDO apostille where needed.

  • Choose standard

For business publication, websites, marketing and internal documentation. Faster and without certification, with the same specialist translator.

Not sure? Send your document and we will advise which form the receiving authority expects.

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Catalan

Many teams speak good Catalan and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Catalan texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Catalan is not Spanish

    Voorbeeld:

Deriving Catalan from Spanish produces errors: it is a Romance language in its own right with its own grammar, vocabulary and spelling.

    Onze aanpak:

We assign a native Catalan translator who works directly into Catalan, not via a Spanish detour.

  • Diacritics and special letters

    Voorbeeld:

The grave and acute accents, the ç, the l·l with its punt volat, and the ny combination must all be exact — a wrong accent changes meaning and pronunciation.

    Onze aanpak:

We check spelling and diacritics at review and hold to the IEC norm for the correct characters.

  • Valencian versus standard Catalan

    Voorbeeld:

Register, word choice and some verb forms differ between the standard register and the Valencian register.

    Onze aanpak:

Per project we confirm up front which variant suits your target region, based on the IEC or AVL norm.

  • Castilian loanwords (castellanismes)

    Voorbeeld:

False friends such as 'cama' (leg, not bed) and Spanish loanwords slip easily into formal texts where they ought to be avoided.

    Onze aanpak:

We keep a terminology list per project and keep castellanismes out of formal register.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Catalan wordt gesproken

Catalan is not a single market. A contract for a notary in Barcelona calls for standard Catalan as set out by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, while a text for the Valencian regional government follows the register of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua. A document for Andorra has its own administrative context again. We match variant, register and terminology to the region where your text will be read, and confirm that choice up front in the quote.

Which variant of Catalan does Ecrivus deliver by default?
By default we work in standard Catalan as set out by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC). For the Valencia region we use the Valencian register of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL), and for the Balearic Islands we apply local terminology on the IEC base. We confirm the variant in the quote based on your target region and audience, and hold to a single variant throughout the document.
Does the UK have sworn translators, and how do you certify a Catalan translation?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). For documents bound for Spain a separate certification by a traductor jurado, appointed by the Spanish Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, often applies; we confirm the right route per destination in the quote.
Is Catalan the same as Spanish?
No. Catalan is a Romance language in its own right, with its own grammar, vocabulary and spelling, not a dialect of Spanish. Deriving a Catalan text from Spanish produces errors. We therefore assign a native Catalan translator who works directly into Catalan, and we keep Castilian loanwords (castellanismes) out of formal register.
What document types are most commonly translated into or from Catalan?
Common document types include contracts, notarial and property deeds, websites and tourism content, personal documents (birth and marriage certificates, diplomas and transcripts) and financial papers. UK-side cases we handle often involve Home Office and UKVI immigration documents, university admissions assessed by UK ENIC and HMCTS court documents. We confirm the approach, variant and any certification per document in the quote.
How quickly will I receive a quote, and what about the lead time?
On working days you receive a quote within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, language pair and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. For tight deadlines we confirm a workable rush schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
Can you legalise a Catalan translation for use overseas?
Yes. Once a document carries a certified translation, it can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public and then to an apostille or legalisation through the FCDO, depending on what the receiving country requires. The relevant route is set out on [GOV.UK — Get a document legalised](https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised). We advise on the chain your destination needs and confirm the steps in the quote.
Why choose a Catalan translation agency instead of finding a freelance translator yourself?
A Catalan translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. We select the native translator who fits your document and region, choose between standard Catalan and the Valencian register, arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer. You keep one point of contact for variant, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
