  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Galician translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Galician

Many teams speak good Galician and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Galician texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Confusion with Spanish and Portuguese

    Voorbeeld:

Galician sits close to both neighbouring languages in vocabulary, but it is a language in its own right. A document from Galicia may also be bilingual (Galician/Spanish).

    Onze aanpak:

We establish up front which language your source document is in before choosing the source language and the translator.

  • Norm and spelling variation

    Voorbeeld:

Alongside the official RAG norm there is a reintegrationist spelling that sits closer to Portuguese (for example -ção/-çom alongside -ción).

    Onze aanpak:

The translator recognises which norm has been used and holds to it consistently across the whole document.

  • False friends with Spanish

    Voorbeeld:

Words such as 'aínda' (still), 'embora' (although) or 'coello' (rabbit) are easily misread by Spanish-oriented automated tools.

    Onze aanpak:

We keep a terminology list per project and have a human specialist check the known pitfalls.

  • Dialect features in transcripts

    Voorbeeld:

Gheada and seseo do not appear in official written texts, but can surface in transcripts or informal sources.

    Onze aanpak:

We treat these features as a record of the source and do not wrongly 'correct' them as spelling errors.

Waar Galician wordt gesproken

Galician is not a variety of Spanish. It is a Romance language in its own right, closely related to Portuguese and used as a co-official language alongside Castilian Spanish in Galicia. Documents from Galicia may be written wholly in Galician, wholly in Spanish or in both. We therefore establish which language your source document is in before we choose the right translator and approach, and we confirm that choice in the quote.

Is Galician the same as Spanish?
No. Galician is an independent Romance language and a co-official language of Galicia alongside Castilian Spanish. In vocabulary it sits closer to Portuguese. As a Galician translation agency we establish, per document, whether the source text is Galician, Spanish or bilingual before we set the approach, because many official documents from Galicia carry both languages.
Does the UK have sworn translators, and how do you certify a Galician translation?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We confirm in the quote which level your receiving authority requires.
Which Galician documents are most commonly translated?
Common requests are civil-status certificates (birth, marriage), diplomas from Galician universities such as USC, UDC and UVigo, judgments and administrative documents from the Xunta de Galicia, and trade documents from the fishing and agri-food sector. For each document type we confirm the approach and any certification in the quote, and we check first whether the source is in Galician or in Spanish.
How quickly will I receive a quote, and what about the lead time?
On working days you receive a quote within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, language pair and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. Galician-English is a niche pair, so for certified work we sometimes ask for a little extra lead time, which we set out in the quote rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
How does Ecrivus handle the different Galician spelling norms?
Alongside the official RAG norm there is a reintegrationist spelling that sits closer to Portuguese. Our translator recognises which norm your source document uses and holds to it consistently, so the text stays internally coherent. We treat dialect features such as gheada and seseo as a record of the source and do not wrongly correct them.
Why choose a Galician translation agency instead of finding a freelance translator yourself?
A Galician translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. Because Galician is a small niche, sourcing a suitable translator yourself often takes time. We select the specialist who fits your document, check the source language first, arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer. You keep one point of contact for source-language checks, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
