What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Morisyen

Many teams speak good Morisyen and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Morisyen texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Confusion with Tongan

    Voorbeeld:

Morisyen is sometimes mistaken for Tongan or a Polynesian language — it is a French-based creole of Mauritius, not a Pacific language.

    Onze aanpak:

We identify the language from the source document and confirm Morisyen (ISO 639-3 mfe) with you before we start.

  • Confusion with related creoles

    Voorbeeld:

Seselwa (Seychelles), Réunion Creole (Réunion) and Rodriguais closely resemble Morisyen but are not identical.

    Onze aanpak:

We match each assignment to the right variant so the text reads as it should for the intended reader.

  • The source language is not a given

    Voorbeeld:

Official Mauritian documents are often in English or French, while statements and interview records may be in Morisyen.

    Onze aanpak:

We verify the source language and the target you need up front and record that choice in the quote.

  • Inconsistent spelling

    Voorbeeld:

Older French-based conventions differ from the standardised Lortograf Kreol Morisien introduced in 2011.

    Onze aanpak:

We follow the standardised spelling, or the older convention where your document or the receiving authority calls for it.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Morisyen wordt gesproken

Morisyen is the language of everyday life in Mauritius, but government, the courts and many official documents run in English and French. That makes the source language of a file anything but a given: a birth certificate may be in French while a statement or interview record is in Morisyen. We verify, document by document, which language the source is and which language the receiving authority expects, and confirm that choice up front in the quote.

What exactly is Morisyen?
Morisyen (Mauritian Creole, ISO 639-3 mfe) is the mother tongue and lingua franca of Mauritius, spoken by more than 1 million people. It is a French-based creole with a vocabulary drawn largely from French. Since 2011 the spelling has been standardised through the Lortograf Kreol Morisien under the Akademi Kreol Morisien, and it was introduced as an optional school subject in 2012.
Does Ecrivus, as a Morisyen translation agency, deliver certified Morisyen translations?
Certified translation into Morisyen is uncommon, because official Mauritian documents are often written in English or French. As a Morisyen translation agency we arrange certified translation — a signed and dated statement of accuracy — where an authority requires it, for example for a UKVI or Home Office procedure. Where more is needed, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We assess per document which route fits, and confirm it in the quote.
Which language is my Mauritian document actually written in?
It is not always obvious. Government and the courts in Mauritius run in English, certificates are often in French, while statements and interview records may be in Morisyen. We verify the source language and the target you need up front, and record that choice in the quote before we begin.
How quickly will I receive a quote for a Morisyen translation?
On working days you receive a reply to your request within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, language pair and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. For tight asylum or immigration deadlines we confirm a workable schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
Does Ecrivus also translate related creoles such as Rodriguais or Seselwa?
Yes. Rodriguais (the variant of Rodrigues), Seselwa (Seychelles) and Réunion Creole (Réunion) are closely related to Morisyen but not identical. We match each assignment to the right variant so the text reads as it should for the intended reader.
Why choose a Morisyen translation agency instead of finding a translator yourself?
A Morisyen translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. We select the specialist who knows Mauritian Creole and your context, verify which language your source is in, arrange certification where an authority requires it and keep the spelling consistent. You keep one point of contact for source language, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
